I assumed the OP would follow the help linked for Mac first - if they haven't tried a Windows PC yet it is probably because they don't own one or don't have immediate access to one. I've just never read a thread where people have had issues with Windows, and some users seemed unable to get it to work on Mac even with detailed installation help. Yes of course the Mac can do it, it is offered by the manufacturer after all You must first run UpdateSettingTool and follow the prompts to run it.

All the latest Sony Firmware Updates are only compatible with Mac OS 10.12-10.14Ģ.
#4.01 SONY UPDATE SOFTWARE#
The system software version is displayed as illustrated below.I have updated Nex7, a6000, a6300, a6500, a7rII, a7rIII, a7III, and a9 all on a Mac without any issues the first time so it isn't that a Mac can't do it but it does come with specific instructions that need to be followed.ġ. On the camera, select "Menu" > "Setup subpage " > "Version". Step 2: Confirm the system software version of your device is Ver.4.01. Please wait until this warning disappears. After restarting, a data recovery warning is sometimes displayed. Click Finish when the LCD screen appears and disconnect the USB cable. Make sure the device is turned on and wait until the LCD screen starts up. #4.01 SONY UPDATE UPDATE#
When the update is complete, the device will automatically restart. 
NOTE: Never turn off the camera or disconnect the USB cable while updating.
After automatically resetting, the progress bar appears during the update process (approximately 5 minutes). Turn off the camera, remove the battery pack, reinsert the battery and turn the camera back on. In this case, disconnect the camera from the computer and click Finish. If the current system software version is 4.01 or later, the update is not required. After confirming that the current software version is "Ver.4.00 or earlier", click Next. The current version number and updated version number appear on the lower left side of the screen. Check the LCD screen of the camera, then click Next. 
In this case, remove the battery pack from the camera, reboot the computer, and follow the instructions from "2. Sometimes when the camera is connected to the computer with the USB cable, a message prompting you to restart the computer may be displayed.
If the computer has multiple USB terminals, try with the other terminals. Disconnect the USB cable and connect it again. NOTE: If the computer cannot find the device, the message "Could not find the camera for this update" is displayed on the computer screen. "USB Mode" appears on the LCD screen of thecamera. Connect the camera to the computer with the supplied USB cable. Following the instructions in the System Software Updater window, on the camera, select "Menu" > "Setup subpage " > "USB Connection" and make sure "Mass Storage" is selected. 
Do not connect the camera to the computer yet. Double-click the file that you downloaded.Close all programs currently running on your computer.Click the Desktop tile from the Start screen and find the downloaded file in the Downloads folder by using Explorer. NOTE: For Windows 8.1/10 users: With the standard settings of Internet Explorer, the update file will be saved in your Downloads folder. Save the file to the desktop of your computer (recommended).
#4.01 SONY UPDATE DOWNLOAD#
After creating a Sony account or signing in with your Sony account, download the software (For customers in the USA). NOTE: Before downloading the software, we recommend that you create a Sony account.
After reading the disclaimer, click Download. Make sure that you are logged on as a user with administrative rights. Do not connect the camera to other any other devices except your computer. Prevent your computer from entering Sleep mode. Remove the memory card from the camera before starting the update process. Do not remove the battery during the update as the sudden loss of power may render the camera inoperable. Use a fully charged rechargeable battery pack NP-FW50 or the AC adaptor AC-PW20 (sold separately).
